Improving training for future healthcare workers

Across the end of 2022 and early 2023, Healthwatch Kent conducted ward visits to understand the traits that people valued from Allied Health Professionals.

This was a project working with Canterbury Christchurch University (CCU) and Healthwatch wanted to ensure that the hospital experience of the public was heard. In this listening the voice of those in Kent hospitals had an opportunity to influence the future of care provision through the way future workforce are guided during their training.

Regular visits were conducted across major hospitals across the county, with a focus on gathering general day-to-day feedback in the hospital main entrances and waiting rooms.

Volunteer teams were developed and trained for each hospital with a view to each finding the confidence to become responsible for conducting the visits and collecting data for Healthwatch. This effort was furthered in the Stakeholder initiative which we will share more upon in the coming months.

The above graphic is from the Stakeholder initiative and reflects our efforts as of August 2023.

The graphic below shows a summary of overarching themes from our work hearing what you valued from Healthcare professionals.

Overall, we utilised responses from 122 people about their experiences of being cared for by allied healthcare professionals. In each of the visits we completed we asked each person the same set of open questions. During the physiotherapy visits we were also able to ask a set of multiple-choice questions to provide some quantitative feedback.
