Support during pregnancy and when caring for those under 5years old
Within this resource, linked to the celebration of ten years of Healthwatch, we profile a local Healthwatch hero! These heroes are projects or people working to support people with the needs of the resource theme, in this case, those who are pregnant or caring for under-fives.
This project was one of 32 people and organisations recognised at our Healthwatch Recognition Awards in Ashford last month. There we spent the evening recognising all the hard work done by the health and social care teams around Kent and Medway.

Organised by both Healthwatch Kent & Healthwatch Medway, 200 guests came together to celebrate the best in health & social care.
Attendees, including the Leaders of both Medway & Kent County Council, applauded alongside senior representatives from every NHS organisation in Kent & Medway. Community and voluntary groups, as well as the individuals who had done the work, joined in the celebrations at Revelations in Ashford.

The Healthwatch hero included relates to dental care for young children.
Award winner: Medway Council Public Health Team
The Team worked through local nurseries and talked to children and families during holiday club activities about oral health as well as exploring supervised teeth brushing sessions in schools.
Healthwatch supported these studies by talking to NHS dentists and highlighted a year-on-year increase in the number of tooth extractions being carried out on children due to tooth decay.

We are currently within a period of heightened political sensitivity due to upcoming elections. This means that Healthwatch Kent and Medway will be posting less content on our website until this period of ‘purdah’ is over.
